PML-N expels Nehal Hashmi from party
islamabad — Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday expelled Senator Nehal Hashmi from the PML-N, DawnNews reported.
A five-member disciplinary committee in its report recommended the prime minister to take action against the senator who was criticised last month for his inflammatory speech threatening “those investigating” the Sharif family.
Head of the committee Raja Zafrul Haq in a report to the PM said the committee, after considering Hashmi’s stance on the matter, concluded that his speech was in violation of the party’s discipline and policy.
The committee unanimously observed that Hashmi’s speech was irresponsible and in violation of the party’s discipline, Haq added.
Accepting the committee’s recommendations, Sharif expelled Hashmi from the party.
In a video that surfaced on media in May, the senator was seen apparently warning the individuals conducting a Supreme Court-sanctioned investigation that they will be “taken to task” for questioning the premier’s family.
His remarks were, prima facie, directed at the Supreme Court-appointed joint investigation team (JIT) probing the Sharif family’s business dealings abroad. Hours after the Hashmi’s remarks made national headlines, his membership of the PML-N was suspended and a showcause notice was issued to him.
Subsequently, he also resigned from his seat in the Senate; however, a few days later Hashmi withdrew his resignation.
