Project to ease traffic towards Dubai airport
dubai — A road project — which will reduce the travel time on the Airport Street from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street from 30 minutes to five minutes — is just months away from completion.
Construction works on the first contract of improvement of the Airport Street Project, covering Rashidiya and Casablanca intersections, have reached 50 per cent.
The project will increase the capacity of the Airport Street by an additional 5,000 vehicles per hour.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said the completion rate had reached 40 per cent for the second contract covering Nad Al Hamar and Marrakech Intersections.
The first phase of the Dh404 million project is expected to open in December this year, while the entire project expected to be complete by the first half of 2018.
So far, works have been completed on the Al Khawaneejbound Bridge at Al Rashidiya Intersection as well as one out of five bridges at Marrakech Intersection in the same direction.
Works in a tunnel at Marrakech Intersection will start this July. The progress in construction works has reached 70 per cent in the flyover at Nad Al Hamar Intersection, whereas completion rate in the flyover at Casablanca Intersection has reached 50 per cent.
“The improvement of Airport Street Project is part of the RTA’s plans to accommodate the projected growth in the number of passengers using the Dubai International Airport, which is expected to shoot to 92 million passengers by 2020. A traffic study highlighted the importance of finalising the project by the end of 2017,” Al Tayer said.
