Teen saves a family caught in house fire

- Afkar Abdullah

ajman — A 17-year-old Syrian teenager saved a family after their villa caught fire in Al Rawda 2 area in Ajman.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohammed Al Hammadi said that last week, he saw flames rising from the yard of the villa. He knocked on the main gate, but no one responded. He then saw two children trying to escape by jumping over the villa’s fence. He helped the children off the wall, rushed them to the hospital and called the Ajman civil defence and police, informing them about the residence location.

Firefighters rushed to the site, controlled the flames and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the villa. They also rescued an elderly man and little girl and rushed them to Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah using the air ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Major Marwan Youssef Al Shamsi, duty officer at Ajarf fire station, said that the civil defence has honoured Mohammed for his brave actions in saving the family’s life. “Calling the authorities and aiding the evacuation of the site is considered the best practice in fire accidents,” he said.

The family could not open the villa doors and escape because the fire broke out near the doors, preventing the older man and child from evacuating the scene.

The situation was doubly dangerous, as the flames could have spread to an electricity transformer located near the house.
