8 killed in Mumbai building collapse

mumbai — At least eight persons were killed and many more trapped when a four-storey dilapidate­d residentia­l building collapsed here on Tuesday morning, an official said.

Another 12 injured persons have been rescued from the rubble and efforts were on to extricate the others from under the debris of Sai Darshan building at Ghatkopar which crashed with a roar around 10.30am.

Fourteen fire engines, rescue vans and ambulances besides teams of the state disaster management force were at the site, the BMC Disaster Control official said.

A fire brigade officer said 30-40 persons were still feared trapped and rescue operations were going on. This was this monsoon’s first major house crash.

The injured were rushed to hospitals. Unconfirme­d reports put the deaths at 12.

Around 12 families lived in the building which also housed a private hospital on the ground floor. The building figured on the BMC’s list of “dangerous buildings”.

Meanwhile, amid incessant rainfall in the city for the last few days, an old two-storeyed building partially collapsed in central Kolkata’s Taltala on Tuesday, the city Fire Department said. “A part of an old building at 10-B Indian Mirror Street collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. Some inhabitant­s of the house are feared trapped under the debris,” a fire brigade official said.

Fire Department officials, local police and a disaster management team have rushed to the spot to initiate the rescue operation. According to fire officials, the part of the building that collapsed was inhabited by a number of people. City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee also reached the spot to inspect the situation. —
