Sharjah labour body gets global recognition
sharjah — The Sharjah Labour Standards Development Authority (SLSDA) recently received an international award for its innovative approach for labourers’ welfare in the emirate.
Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, presented the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award to the authority at the annual Esri User Conference in San Diego, California. Selected from over 300,000 eligible candidates from all over the world, SLSDA bagged the award for its innovative application of technology, data collection, geospatial information visualisation and thought leadership in geographic information system (GIS) through local government.
Salem Al Qaseer, chairman of the SLSDA, said: “This innovative project was carried out under the support and guidance of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. We have been able to increase awareness on the importance of compliance with labour rights, regulations and standards, and to contribute to providing an attractive environment for employers and labourers, in collaboration and coordination with the government agencies and private sector.”
Faisal Binsannad Al Shamsi, director of strategic planning and business development and project manager at the SLSDA, said the project allows the identification of labour accommodations and helps to segregate them according to the quality of life and living conditions. It also enables inspection schedules and highlights the needs of the labourers and proximity to services and facilities.
