Sharjah sees over 56K accidents in 7 months

sharjah — In the last seven months, 56,706 accidents have been reported across the emirate, according to the Sharjah Police.

Major Abdul Rahman Khater, director of traffic awareness and informatio­n department at the Sharjah Police, said that the rise in the number of accidents and damage caused to private and public properties have made the police officials find ways to stop road fatalities ,which ended up in installing 29 smart radars across the emirate.

He added that the traffic and patrols department at the Sharjah Police installed them at the hot spots with a focus on highways including Al Dhaid Street, Mleiha Street and Sheikh Khalifa Street. The new radars are expected to reduce the number of deaths and injuries during the second half of this year.

Majid Al Mazrouei, director of the traffic and patrol department, said that the smart radar will undoubtedl­y reduce the number of offences as they will target bad practices like tailgating, which caused more than 60 per cent of the accidents. Of the violations reported, use of mobile phones while driving caused 57 injuries, where as tailgating led to 44 injuries.

He added that smart radars will monitor the road behaviour of motorists and help in curbing traffic offences. The traffic and patrol department, aims to contribute to the achievemen­t of the national strategy 2021 in addition to launching more traffic awareness campaigns. The latest figures also revealed that 66 per cent of tickets were issued in the presence of motorists.
