‘Let’s walk’ campaign will cover seven tourist spots in Sharjah

sharjah — Sharjah launched the fourth edition of its annual health and tourism campaign on Wednesday.

Also dubbed the world’s first online health and tourism campaign, the campaign promotes an active lifestyle. The walk will centre around seven tourist sites, including Heart of Sharjah, Central Market, Al Majaz, Al Qasba, Al Majaz Theater and Flag Island.

Iman Rashid Saif, director of health education at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, said this year’s campaign will be themed ‘Let’s walk’ to enhance the culture of walking. Lack of physical activity increases the risk of serious and chronic illnesses by 30 per cent, while even a 30-minute walk every day reduces the risk of high blood pressure, that causes strokes, by 27 per cent. A regular walking habit also slashes the risk of Type 2 diabetes by around 60 per cent, and even reduces the risk of cancers and dementia at an older age.

“For the first time this year, we have signed a partnership agreement with World Walking Corporation,” Saif added.

The campaign targets social media so visitors can learn more about it through the hashtags #HealthAndTourism and #LetsWalkSharjah. The campaign’s social media accounts play a big role in spreading August and September activities happening across Sharjah, at the Sharjah Ladies Club, Al Majaz Waterfront, Mega Mall, Sahara Center and other spots.
