Samsung has a new ‘edge’ in its TVs

dubai — Samsung has a long line of televisions that cater to various lifestyles, but this time they’ve ‘edged’ it up a bit. (But no, we’re not talking about something similar to its smartphones.)

The South Korean technology giant on Wednesday unveiled its new The Frame TV in the UAE, whose bezels are akin to frames found in traditional works of art hanging on walls.

And the frames on these 4K ultrahigh definition TVs can be customised to suit any room, with oak, walnut and white options available.

All said, The Frame doubles as a work of art; when Art Mode is on, the display turns into a digital painting with a selection of 100 art pieces in 10 different categories. An store, meanwhile, will soon be available, in which users can buy other images.

Samsung Gulf Electronics’ head of product marketing for its consumer electronics division, Haris Munif, says that the TV market is changing, with users looking for different aspects that would appeal to them. “The integration between lifestyle, design, art and technology is becoming increasingly prominent in the everyday world,” he said. The Frame, he adds, answers this call, because it “beautifies [users’] space and lives in perfect harmony with their interior decor”.

Artists present

To drive the point further, prominent GCC-based artists graced the event, who felt that the fusion between art and technology is not just a good move for the both industries, but will be an inspiration to aspiring artists — especially in this advanced age.

Emirati digital artist and sculptor Jalal Luqman said that an offering like The Frame is “long overdue”. It gives “another avenue of expression” for both artists and lovers — allowing anyone to be a “curator in their own home”, he added.

Saggaf Abdillah Alhashmi, another Emirati artist and one of those Khaleej Times spoke to, said that it was “exciting” to see works of art in such a way. While already having participated in exhibits, he feels that “he can still improve more”. Alhashmi can relate to The Frame well because he also does creates his art on digital devices.

Dubai-based Johan Alberts, founder and art director of heARTistry and who has been painting for over 40 years, says that this fusion will further inspire him to “make a statement in my art”.

Filipino Donell Gumiran, meanwhile, is taking this cue from Samsung to “keep shooting and keep painting”. “There are no rules; at the end of the day, you just follow your heart,” he added.

The Frame will be available from Thursday in 55- and 65-inch models, and will be priced at Dh6,999 and Dh10,999, respectively.
