To scrap grace speed or cut fine is the question

abu dhabi — The Federal Traffic Council is studying a proposal to do away with the 20km/h grace speed limit on UAE roads. The proposal came after a senior Dubai policeman — who is also the chairman of the Federal Traffic Council — tweeted a question asking residents if they preferred a reduced speeding fine of Dh300 by doing away with the grace speed limit; or keeping the Dh600 fine and grace limit intact.

“The council will study people’s views and opinions about the removal of the 20km/h grace speed limit and forward its recommendations to Lt.-General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior,” said Maj-Gen Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police for operations. He had previously tweeted: “Do you support maintaining the 20km/h grace speed limit margin

and the Dh600 fine; or the removal of the speed limit margin and reducing the fine to Dh300?”

It was retweeted about 500 times and over 400 likes; and received over 2,000 replies. Based on the replies, there were takers for both options.

Al Zafeen said the aim of the tweet was to get the residents’ views on the subject. The traffic council will make its recommendations depending on what the majority of people say, he said. ismail@khaleejtimes.com
