Arabian Gulf Super Cup shifted to January
abu dhabi — The Arabian Gulf Super Cup match between League champions Al Jazira and President’s Cup winners Al Wahda to be held in Cairo has been postponed from September to January 2018, the Pro League Committee officials said on Wednesday.
The Super Cup has been the curtain raiser tournament to the UAE football season.
It was on a request made by Presentation Sports, the Egyptian company tasked with holding the match, the tournament has been postponed.
Pro League Committee executive office vice president Yousef Al Khoory said during a press conference that both the clubs had agreed to the change.
“We will announce further details in October. Last year’s match between Al Ahli and Al Jazira was a grand success,” Al Khoory said.
The officials said the winner will bag Dh1 million and runner-up Dh500,000. They, however added that the Cup wasn’t just a demonstration of football but enhancing ties between two nations.
The previous editions of Egyptian Super Cup have been held in Abu Dhabi with great success.
Presentation Sports board of directors chairman Mohammed Kamel said the shifting of dates will help to market the match in a better way.
“There are several dimensions involved, including the school year. We want maximum response. We are sure of holding the best ever Super Cup in Cairo,” Kamel said.
The officials assured there will lot of surprises for fans and January date will be well worth the wait.
