Public transport users during Eid reach 5.5m
dubai — The Eid weekend in Dubai experienced heavy traffic in the usual holiday areas with around 5.5 million passengers using the city’s public transport.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Monday that the total number of passengers lifted by public transport and taxicabs in Dubai during Eid Al-Adha holidays topped 5.4 million.
“The number of metro riders reached 1.8 million passengers, with 1.1 million passengers carried on the Red Line compared to 651,854 passengers on the Green Line,” said Mohammed Al Ali, director of strategic planning at the RTA Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector.
“The Dubai Tram was also busy lifting 74,311 passengers, while 1.4 million passengers were picked up by public buses. Marine transport users reached 240,954 passengers and 1.8 million passengers hailed taxicabs.”
The RTA had prepared a comprehensive traffic plan to optimise the use of vehicles during the holidays, which witnessed heavy traffic especially in the areas around Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Water Canal.
“We had borne in mind to achieve integration between different public transport means and traffic regulations to facilitate the movement of the public to and from these areas during this occasion,” Al Ali underlined.
