New education system is in tune with the times
The UAE’s decision to introduce education reforms and unify the sector is a step in the right direction. It has come at the right time as the country plans to diversify its economy away from its traditional strengths, and will need innovative thinkers from the school level to meet national objectives. This bottom up approach will lay the base for a sound knowledge economy that is prepared for challenges of the future. The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, directed that the new system, the Emirati School Model, be rolled out after merging the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec), the schools regulator in the capital, with the Ministry of Education. Under the plan, all public and private schools offering the Ministry of Education syllabus will shift to the Emirati School Model.
Education standards from the primary level are sure to rise with this model based on a student-centred learning approach. Adec has already implemented elements of the system “where students learn in a resource and technology-rich environment, within modern teaching facilities”. A wide variety of learning activities cater to the different learning styles of each student. This could be groundbreaking because it will treat every student differently, based on learning ability, interest and ambition. The move from the one-size-fits-all approach is indeed refreshing and will ease the stress of learning for both children and their parents. Even better, the reforms could mean qualified teachers are attracted to work in the UAE. It would also mean financial stability where they get their due in society. Reforms would mean the ministry supports the professional development of teachers through curriculum guides and resources. An open school system where children are encouraged to think critically should be applauded. Their cultural and national identity will be nurtured and promoted under the project. With the revamp and consolidation of the sector, the UAE hopes to introduce the best global practices that meets the emerging needs in higher education. The country is already home to some of the leading educational institutions. The Emirati School Model is a bold move from a fragmented system to a robust one where all stakeholders benefit.
