Gambling den busted after drug tip-off

dubai — A group of 12 Chinese people have been charged in the Court of First Instance with running a flat as a gambling den. The group, including at least three women, allegedly ran a flat in Naif as a den where gamblers can place bets for money.

Some of the defendants, aged between 37 and 54, have also been charged with gambling. The main defendant, a housewife aged 43, admitted to the charge of running her rented flat as a gambling den. The other women accomplice­s confessed that they were watching the players during the game to prevent any cheating. The arrest was made on June 15.

“We were first tipped-off that a man and a woman possessed and used drugs. On June 4, we obtained a public prosecutio­n warrant to raid their flat in Meydan Jamal Abdelnasse­r, Naif area, and arrest them and search their cars and flat,” an anti-narcotics police lieutenant said.

Money of different currencies found in a purse were seized, which included Dh20,000 and $850 and 10 Kuwaiti Dinars. Another amount of Dh18,525 found with another suspect was also seized. Cheques were also found and seized by the police officers.

The defendants were all taken to the General Directorat­e of Narcotics. Their urine samples were all negative for drugs. They were then referred to Naif Police Station on gambling-related charges.
