AR indeed augmenting a new reality

- Sandhya D’Mello

Imagine you are standing on Sheikh Zayed Road and want to check the latest apartments available for lease, or a near by restaurant of your choice but do not know its location. Or, you want to shop and want to probably check how a particular piece of furniture would look in your living room or bedroom.

Well, soon you will be able to download apps that will give you real-time information not only about a place, but an enhanced virtual look and feel of the information you desire and all this is thanks to augmented reality.

The latest in AR was available in form of Lenovo Phablets at Gitex Shopper 2017 and has received good sales response.

“AR is definitely a trend to watch out for in the technology space, which transports consumers into a world of new experiences, places, and sensory experiences. Such innovation and immersive experiences are the biggest factors impacting the latest trends in consumer technology. People want augmented and engaging ways to carry out everyday tasks,” said Nadeem Khanzadah, head of omnichannel retail at Jumbo Group.

Reflecting the current global appeal for AR products, visitors at Gitex Shopper sought out the latest and best gadgets in this category, including smartphones, wearables and virtual reality headsets.

Apart from AR as a rising trend, the company is also expecting an increase in wearable technologies, VR products, drones and high-end gaming products. Apple has also started its venture into the AR space when it launched ARKit in June’s Worldwide Developer Conference in California, allowing developers to create AR apps for gaming, simulation and many others using the latest iOS 11 operating system.

Similarly, Canon has received great response for its products at Gitex. Recently, Canon Middle East, in partnership with Dubai Internet City, unveiled its first Innovation Centre in Dubai. The centre is an evolved showroom concept, and Canon has chosen the UAE to develop the centre to its full potential and establish it as a model for showrooms of the future.

A noteworthy feature of the Innovation Centre is the Interactive Projection room, which transforms into a near VR experience.

Another key aspect of the facility is AR services, which offer video services and customisation of communication using variable data to meet the needs of today’s changing digital world and communication.
