VINDICTIVE QATAR REGIME FREEZES ROYAL’S ASSETS

-

jeddah — A controversial member of Qatar’s royal family said on Saturday that Qatari authorities have frozen his bank accounts over his role in Doha’s crisis with its neighbours.

“The Qatari regime honors me by freezing all of my bank accounts, and I thank them for this honor and I have the honor to present it to the homeland,” Sheikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Thani tweeted.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt severed ties with Qatar on June 5 over its alleged support of extremism.

In August, Sheikh Abdullah met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz to mediate on reopening a land border to allow Qatari pilgrims to perform the Haj pilgrimage. It was the first public high-level encounter between the nations since the diplomatic crisis erupted.

Sheikh Abdullah belongs to a branch of Al Thani royal family. “I hope that Qatar will expel those exploiting the country for money and other benefits, and return to the embrace of our sister countries that we cherish, because only they can help us. May God save Qatar and its people,” he added in another post on Saturday. Last month, Sheikh Abdullah called for a meeting for all royal members to contain the problem.

“I call on the wise sons of the family, and the prestigious Qatari people to sit in a brotherly, familial and national meeting to discuss the crisis, and what we would be able to do in order to get everything back on track, and enforce the Gulf cooperation,” he said.

He told Al Arabiya at the time that the situation surrounding the crisis was “getting worst” and is “pushing us to a fate we do not want to reach”.

Earlier, there was an escalation from the Qatari ruling family in favour of talks. A prominent member of ruling family and former Qatari foreign minister, Sheikh Sultan bin Suhaim, repeated calls for a national meeting of the family’s elders to put an end to the current rift. “We can no longer remain quiescent towards it,” he said. —
