Mayor vows to make Karachi clean, green

karachi — Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar has said removal of the backlog of garbage in Karachi was a challenge which he had accepted and will achieve this target at any cost.

He was addressing a meeting held in Gulberg Town Office on Friday in connection with the cleaning campaign presently under way in District Central.

“We knew our authority and we shall remain on the ground. Bahria Town helped us in removal and disposal of garbage backlog in all districts of the city”, he added .

The meeting was also attended by MNA Sheikh Salahuddin, Abdul Wasim, MPA Jamal Ahmed, Azeem Farooqui and Wasim Qureshi as well as the Chairman Land Committee of City Council Syed Arshad Hassan, Chairman DMC Central Rehan Hashmi, Vice Chairman Shakir Ali, heads of department­s of KMC and DMC Central and other officers.

Addressing the officials, the mayor said all those who did not want to work should relinquish their posts and go on leave.

The mayor warned the officers who take commission or bribe from sweepers will be terminated if they did so again.

Wasim Akhtar said, “The city was facing a lot of problems and we have to solve them all in spite of our limited resources.”

He said all the union councils of Karachi will be cleaned during this campaign which was aimed at making the city clean and green.

He urged the officers not to take any pressure while performing their duties and play their constructi­ve role in the ongoing cleanlines­s drive.

He said from today all union council chairmen and vice chairmen would be on ground along with officers concerned and other staff to monitor the work.

He also ordered fumigation and tree plantation along side the cleaning of garbage and waste. The chairmen of different union councils on this occasion informed the mayor about their problems and gave details of the ongoing developmen­t activities in their area upon which the Mayor Karachi urged them to carry on their duty so that city could be made clean and green. — APP
