Motorists, show some respect while on the road

-

The UAE has one of the most stringent driver training systems in the world that includes theory and practical lessons, followed by tests. It takes 20-40 lessons on the road to be eligible to take these tests. Training manuals are constantly updated to ensure best practices are followed and motorists are prepared for life on the road. Yet, accident rates are a cause for concern in the country. Four people were killed this past weekend in different accidents which the police blamed on speeding. Not surprising. Motorists don’t seem to listen, or care in their hurry to get to their destinations. Many are on their smartphones while driving and are taking out their fun and frustrations on the roads by stepping on the accelerator.

When they speed, they tailgate and bully other drivers out of the way. It’s time we call out these road bullies and make them pay for this killing spree that is leaving many families without bread-winners and children.

A sense of recklessness has gripped motorists and we won’t hesitate to call it madness — a feeling of superiority when in a large or muscular sports car pumping out more horse power. To know what we mean, take a drive down any highway later in the evening when drivers compete and push their machines harder. One reason why all those driving lessons are not being followed by motorists is because they bring different driving attitudes to the road and varied levels of aggression which is a recipe for disaster. Another reason is they are fatigued and are therefore in a rush to get home even if it means running over other users. A third reason is they believe they have right of way because of the size of their vehicle. What we need is a culture of tolerance on our highways and other roads. The law has done its part. Drivers must keep the spirit of the law and show some humility when in traffic. It could mean the difference between life and death. Start early and drive safely to be with your loved ones at home. The other trip could be to the morgue.
