- Sherouk Zakaria

dubai — As part of this year’s Dubai Forum for Government Best Practices, government entities will compete in giving ideas that will make Dubai the best host for Expo2020, it was announced on Wednesday.

The competition ‘Dubai Innovates’ will be the highlight of the two-day forum, taking place from November 7 to 8, to inspire and generate creative ideas and promote the culture of innovation among government entities.

Under the theme “An inspiring government shapes the future and achieves happiness”, the forum’s 10th edition will seek to motivate administrators and officials to enact initiatives that will place Dubai among the world’s most innovative cities.

Dr Ahmed Al Nusseirat, general coordinator of the Dubai Government Excellence Programme, said 12 government entities responded with 10 ideas each to the competition, giving potential solutions to challenges and seizing emerging opportunities within government.

“We want to encourage government employees and work teams to think outside the box to serve the country and future generations creatively,” said Al Nusseirat. The competition, he said, is open to government employees with inventive solutions to issues in government.

Three winning entities will be selected based on the authenticity of the idea, its applicability, expected results and ability to contribute to UAE competitiveness. This year’s theme lies upon “inspiring and delighting people.” As part of the forum, participants will draw on the success stories of prominent figures who have left their mark in what they do, demonstrating that the common starting point for any country is ambition. Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, newly-appointed secretary-general of The Executive Council of Dubai, said Dubai looks to display its achievements to inspire and get inspired by other governments. The forum, he said, will serve as a platform for knowledge and experience transfer.

“Today, we are talking Artificial Intelligence, technology and innovation. The government is moving towards becoming one of the smartest in the world. The forum will offer a range of ideas and themes that will undoubtedly enhance the government and encourage government employee to be more innovative, and productive,” he said.

The two-day event will feature 38 speakers, among which 31 are UAE-based headed by Minister of State of Happiness Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi; and Lieutenant -General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, head of General Security of the UAE; and Idris Jala, former Malaysian cabinet member, will be among the speakers to highlight the professional practices that have elevated the quality and efficiency of government work.

The first day will be devoted to success stories, and will feature special sessions from Dr Naif Al Mutawa, an award-winning serial entrepreneur, clinical psychologist and clinical hypotherapist, and Dr Beau Lotto, a neuroscientist and founder of Misfits Studio.

Ten interactive sessions will also line the conference’s second day, with hands-on training sessions from government entities.
