Kubica knocking on the doors again

- James Jose

abu dhabi — Not everyone gets a second chance, especially in a cutting edge sport like Formula One. But Robert Kubica could count himself one of those lucky few after life gave him another shot at a sport that he passionately loves.

It is not set in stone just yet but Kubica, who suffered career-threatening injuries while taking part in a rally in Italy in 2011, is inching towards a return to Formula One next season after the Williams F1 Team confirmed that the Pole would take part in the Pirelli tyre test in Abu Dhabi.

This will be his third test with Williams after racking in the miles in the 2014 car at Silverstone and Hungaroring last month.

“Williams Martini Racing is pleased to confirm it will run Robert Kubica and Sergey Sirotkin for the Abu Dhabi Pirelli tyre test, alongside current race driver Lance Stroll,” the team said in a statement on Wednesday.

The test will be held over two days at the Yas Marina Circuit following the conclusion of the season-ending Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. This will be his third test with Williams after racking in the miles in the 2014 car at Silverstone and Hungaroring last month.

And if all goes well, Kubica, who formerly raced with BMW-Sauber and Renault, could be handed a route back to Formula One.

“On day one, Robert Kubica will drive the FW40 in the morning session, before Lance Stroll takes over in the afternoon. On day two, Sergey Sirotkin will drive in the morning and afternoon sessions before handing over to Robert in the late afternoon,” the team added.
