Misunderstandings develop easily among new couples

abu dhabi — Social media can be distracting and destructive for couples. However, what is crucial is developing mutual understanding, maintaining respect, and above all, not breaking trust, couples said.

Savitha Avish and her husband, Avish Ashokan, just celebrated 10 years of marriage in Bali. She told Khaleej Times: “Social media trust and compliance can only come if both parties understand it together; it’s a very thin line and a lot of problems can come with it.

“We are both on social media, primarily Facebook, and it actually brings us together as a couple, because we both love photographs,” said the 37-year-old mother of two boys. Her husband is a senior manager at Etisalat, a passionate photographer who enjoys the hobby in his free time.

Savitha says that Avish, 40, is always up to date about gadgets and the latest technology, due to his career. “He’s not just sitting on Facebook, he is actually reading and researching, so I like to respect his space when he comes home and allow him to do his bit,” she added.

However, Savitha said there is a “very thin line” that can be drawn when it comes to social media, because distraction levels are high and tolerance levels are low.

Social media issues mostly happen with newly married couples who just started living under the same roof. Keep social media usage as limited as possible, so you get more quality time with each other.” Savitha Avish, mother of two

Newly married couples often face problems with social media, because they are unaware of how much time their partner really spends online, she noted.

“Social media issues mostly happen with newly married couples who just started living under the same roof.”

She said it is nevertheless crucial for all couples to limit their time on social media, and use their precious time making real life memories with families and loved ones — in the real world, instead of the online world.

It is also important to restrict the number of “followers” and “friends” online, she thinks. “I keep a restricted friends list and social media accounts. We only have people who are important to us.,” she advised.
