Autistic teen becomes vet for a day
abu dhabi — Egyptian resident Alaa Ehab, 19, has always loved animals. She wishes to be a veterinarian.
A student of the Emirates Autism Society, Ehab’s dream got closer to realisation when Al Ain Zoo made her a vet for a day and let her practise her dream job.
Al Ain Zoo hosted Ehab on a private cultural and educational programme that was specially tailored for her. It gave her a real experience of working as a veterinarian, and step into a field that has attracted many female students in recent years.
“I loved it. I spent the whole day learning about animal care and treatment. I have read a lot on veterinary medicine out of passion for animals and caring, but the live experience was completely different. Thank you, Al Ain Zoo, for your warm welcoming support and awareness.” Ehab said.
The day at the zoo included an educational tour of the veterinary department. She also attended live animal treatment sessions, followed by a discussion and meet-up with veterinarians. Ehab’s reception workshops gave her an insight into the field and a general idea to help her choose her college major.

Dr Khawla Al Saadi, chairman of the Emirates Autism Society, praised Al Ain Zoo’s collaboration as a main partner, and its efforts in education supporting the society’s objectives.
