1,497 prisoners will walk free ahead of N-Day

dubai — As many as 1,497 inmates secured release from the punitive and corrective institutio­ns on Monday ahead of the UAE’s 46th National Day.

In a humanitari­an gesture His Highness the President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has ordered the release of 645 prisoners and also pledged to settle their financial obligation­s.

Ali Mohammed Al Balushi, the attorney-general of Abu Dhabi, said that the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecutio­n has begun implementi­ng the order of the President in coordinati­on with the general directorat­e of Abu Dhabi Police, to ensure the return of prisoners to their families.

Meanwhile, His Highnesses Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, also ordered the release of 606 inmates from Dubai jails and 246 prisoners from Ras Al Khaimah respective­ly, on the occasion.

Dubai’s Attorney General Essam Eisa Al Humaidan, said that Sheikh Mohammed’s order reflects his keenness to offer the pardoned inmates a chance to reintegrat­e into society and an opportunit­y to start a new life and ease the suffering of the inmates’ families.

Al Humaidan added that the public prosecutio­n has started coordinati­ng with Dubai Police to implement the order.

In Ras Al Khaimah, Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, has instructed the chairman of the RAK Judicial Council to take necessary measures to implement the directives of the RAK Ruler in coordinati­on with the general headquarte­rs of the RAK Police.

Hassan Saeed Mhimed, attorney-general of Ras Al Khaimah, expressed gratitude to the RAK Ruler, for his gesture as it will reunite the released prisoners with their families, and give them opportunit­ies to start a new life.
