Spirit of unity as Capital flaunts Emirati identity

- Ashwani Kumar

abu dhabi — The world is here in Abu Dhabi to celebrate the Spirit of the Union and mark the 46th UAE National Day. The Abu Dhabi Corniche was the centre of all activities — air show, fireworks, car rally, gettogethers, parties and all. Every nook and corner of beaches and parks were filled with people with tents, mats, beach chairs, food and drinks — overall a carnival atmosphere.

Hundreds of families in parks and malls had the national flags in hand to flaunt Emirati identity, culture and heritage in some form.

A big group of locals from Ajman was seen with decorated cars displaying the Emirati pride in the Capital.

Ahmed Hashmi, with his sixmember family, joined the celebrations and his new-born was super excited. “I love my country. Many nationalities are celebrating my country’s National Day as their very own. This is what I believe makes the UAE special,” said Hashmi, while watching the aerobatic show by Al Fursan.

Samer Moosa, a Syrian national, was amazed by the fireworks. “I haven’t seen anything like this in my life. You know the situation back in my country. Such celebrations offer rare occasions for someone like us to forget the sorrows and enjoy. The fireworks were amazing and my kids couldn’t stop talking about it. They missed all the action last year and I made sure they are here this time. When you talk about National Day, there is no other emirate but Abu Dhabi to celebrate it in a grand way,” said the Ras Al Khaimah resident, who has spent all four holidays at his brother’s place in Abu Dhabi.

Even as the mainland buzzed with activities, there wasn’t any law and order issue as the Abu Dhabi Police covered all areas and kept things under check. Ambulances and fire engines were stationed at key places for emergencies.

Haitham Hadi, an Jordanian expat, praised the services of the police. “They are everywhere ensuring safe celebrations for everyone. No wonder this place is among the safest in the world. I truly admire their dedication and salute the martyrs of this land,” he said.

Mohammed Sulaiman, who had been to Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, urged everyone to visit the historic event in Al Wathba. “If someone wants to know this country in a better way, a visit to the festival is a must. We will soon enter the ‘Year of Zayed’. Residents celebrating the National Day will get to know about the life and legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.”

The celebrations will continue today — the last day of the public sector holidays.
