dubai — Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan was delighted to return with a bogey-free round of golf that put her in the lead after the first day of the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic at the Emirates Golf Club on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old from Bangkok carded a five-under 67 for the day to hold a slender oneshot advantage over the chasing pack of Scotland’s Kelsey MacDonald, Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Finnish pair Minea Blomqvist and Noora Tamminen and Australia’s Celina Yuan.

Sangchan said that the game plan of keeping things tidy worked for her on the day.

“Today (Wednesday), I just stay on my game. Don’t need to make a birdie, but don’t let it go. So I tried my best today (Wednesday),” Sangchan said after her round.

And Sangchan, who won the Sanya Ladies Open in China for her maiden victory on the Ladies European Tour, was pleased with how the season has gone so far.

“I play three events like this. I play good, so it made me confidence to play good here,” she said adding that the greens at the Majlis Course were quite fast.

“The greens are really fast,” felt Sangchan.

Meanwhile, Kelsey MacDonald who had six birdies and two bogeys in her round of four-under 68, was quite happy with the start. “I’m very, very happy with my start. I got a good couple of birdies in the first few holes, which was nice,” said Donald.

The Glasgow resident, whose best finish this season has been tied third at the US Women’s Open Sectional Qualifier Europe, revealed that having one of her best friends caddying for her has put in her in a good space.

“I’ve got one of my best friends Katie on the golf bag as well. So she’s caddying, so that also makes it more enjoyable. She’s PGA assistant at the Golden Golf Club. So yeah, it’s really nice to have her here this week,” she said.

Donald rated the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic as one of her favourite events apart from her home tournament, the Scottish Open.

“I love coming back here. This is my favourite event in the year apart from the Scottish Open. They look after us so well here at this course,” Donald said.
