Drunk man threatens to kill ex-wife, court hears

- Marie Nammour

dubai — A 47-year-old Emirati man is standing trial in the Court of First Instance after he allegedly got drunk and threatened to kill his ex-wife and their kids as the woman refused to have sex with him.

Apart from the criminal threats, he is also facing charges of insult and drinking alcohol without a licence.

The man has also been charged with damaging a public property. Prosecutors accused him of damaging a police car’s back door.

The woman lodged a complaint against him on March 27 at Bur Dubai police station.

The 43-year-old Emirati housewife said after her children went to school, her ex-husband knocked on the living room’s door. “He was calling me. I could see from the room door’s glass he had a cleaver. I did not open the door. I could also tell he had been drinking alcohol because of the liquor bottles left outside,” the woman told the prosecutor.

“A few minutes later, he knocked on the door again. He used abusive language and threatened to kill me and the children.”

A police corporal said he was on patrol duty when he got an order to go to a villa in Al Quoz residential area. “We took the defendant inside the police car. He smelled like he had been drinking alcohol.”

The officer further told the prosecutor the accused damaged the police car’s back door and kept screaming and kicking it. “The door got damaged and it was not possible to close it ever since.”

The court set the next hearing for December 17.
