dubai — The Dubai Police have arrested an Asian man and his son for issuing dud cheques worth Dh23million.

The duo issued the cheques during the recent four-day National Day break and when the unsuspecting traders submitted them after the holidays, the cheques bounced.

The Raffa Police launched a manhunt for the fraudsters following around 10 complaints lodged against the duo. The cops swooped down on their various hideouts, even as the duo continued to change their location in Dubai and Sharjah.

Brigadier Ahmed Thani bin Ghalaita, director of Al Rafaa police station, said a number of dud cheques were issued by the 60-year-old father, and his son, in his early forties, in a short period of time. When the cops reviewed the criminal records and system, they found the duo had issued the cheques in Dubai and Sharjah. It was found that the father had issued cheques for Dh21 million while the son wrote cheques worth Dh1.9 million. All these were issued during the holidays so that the fraud couldn’t be discovered and the duo had enough time to disappear.

Brigadier Galita pointed out that the father had bought goods and materials from traders after paying a small amount and issued cheques for the rest.

When they started search for the two conmen, the police team found they did not stay in one particular location and so they had to widen their net. After their arrest, the pair were handed over to the public prosecution for further action.

Brigadier Galita said the police are reviewing its system for speedy arrests to prevent further crimes. He called on the traders and merchants to be more careful in commercial dealings and to check the identity of the person they sell goods to.
