Cops to rehabilitate teen drug addict

- Amira Agarib

dubai — The Dubai Police are rehabilitating a 19-year-old female drug addict, who got hooked to the dope unknowingly.

The police came to know about the Emirati girl’s addiction after the man who supplied the drugs to her was arrested. On checking the drug dealer’s mobile, they found her phone number saved in it. The peddler told the police that he sold drugs to the teenager.

During the police interrogation, she said that the first time she consumed the pills was when she was travelling with a family member to an Asian country.

She met a group of young people and they offered her some pills to try. When she returned to the UAE, she began searching for the stuff and met a friend who guided her through an intermediary to a trader who provided her the drugs.

During questioning, the drug dealer told the police about more people involved in the trade.

The police said that no criminal case was recorded against the woman taking into account the circumstances in which she got hooked to the drugs. She was referred to the division of social communication and rehabilitation for proper treatment, after it was found that she did not know that the pills were banned drugs.

The police said the girl’s parents were shocked when they came to know about the entire matter. Her father couldn’t believe it and was counselled by the department officials on how to deal with the situation.

The department of public drug control revealed that most people were involved in the purchase of drugs through the Internet, without realising they are illegal.
