Emirati cop rescues trapped family after car flips over

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — Badria Ahmed Al Shehi was driving to her university in Ajman when she saw a car flip over several times causing a cloud of dust, and hampering visibility. It came to rest on the side of the road.

The Emirati woman, who is a non-commissioned officer with the general department of resources and assistance services (RAK Police), leapt out of her car and swung into action to help the screaming passengers.

Al Shehi was rattled to find an Emirati family, including two women, three children and a housemaid, trapped inside the car. They had sustained injuries. The courageous officer, with her presence of mind, rescued all of them.

Acknowledging her bravery and humanitarian initiative, the RAK civil defence has honoured Al Shehi. “This is the least we can do for Badria who has set a precedent for Emirati women,” the department said. Recalling the episode, Al Shehi told Khaleej Times: “I was driving on the Seeh Al Barirat Road, Ras Al Khaimah when a speeding car overturned many times. I got off, rushed to the car and saw a trapped family screaming for help.

“I pulled out the children with the help of some young men at the scene and shifted them to my car so that the kids didn’t get shocked on seeing the excessive bleeding that their mother and the woman next to her had suffered.”

The two women bled so profusely that the car’s interiors were almost covered with their blood, she added. “I also rescued the housemaid and shifted her to my vehicle.”

Dense smoke was rising from the bonnet of the damaged car and it could have caught fire any time, while the two badly injured women were still inside, she pointed out.

“I put in all my efforts and managed to pull the two women out, thanks to some passers-by. I carried out an initial medical checkup of the two. Four minutes later, four vehicles arrived at the site and shifted the entire family to the nearest hospital.” ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
