Fewa device helps avert electricity outages

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — The customers of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) need not worry about sudden power cuts anymore, as a sophisticated device will detect all possible outages and power cuts in advance.

Official sources told Khaleej Times that Fewa started using the first ‘Partial Discharge’ gadget in the central region. “The device can detect indoor termination defects out of the cable box, and outdoor termination defects before it happens.”

This advanced apparatus will help Fewa technicians predict the power outages and failures in advance, they added. “Some of these defects are not easy to detect without these devices.”

The authority has entered into an agreement with one of three bidding companies to provide these devices.

“Fewa now has two types of devices that help predict power failures in advance; these include the infrared camera and the partial discharge gadget.

“Both of these devices are able to detect the slightest increase in the temperature of electric cables and parts.”

Shaker Abu Faris, a Jordanian resident, said he used to have a big problem with unexpected power cuts, particularly in the summer months, and in the late hours. “This device will hopefully put an end to this serious problem which reportedly resulted in several fires.”

Meanwhile, the authority announced that it has replaced over 100km of earth power cables across Ras Al Khaimah.

“These are meant to boost the performance of the main electricity transmission and distribution networks.” ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
