dubai — Some Dubai parking lots are still free to use for motorcyclists, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed to Khaleej Times. However, if motorcyclists park their bikes in paid zones, they have to pay to use the service.

“If they (motorcyclists) park at the RTA paid-parking areas, they have to pay. Failure to do so will net them fines,” an RTA official told Khaleej Times on Monday. Free parking is still available at private spaces near buildings or complexes.

Motorcyclists and delivery boys who have spoken to Khaleej Times said this announcement is not new. They have been getting fines if they parked on pavements, roadsides or alleyways for obstruction of public way. Parking in between parked cars or in front of a car at RTA designated areas is also obstruction and will get them fines.

Filipino expat Chris Mercado, who has been working as a delivery boy for three years, said: “We

His colleague, Nepalese expat Aakash, has previously parked on a pavement near Al Khail Gate and got a fine.

“Even if we use a smaller space than a regular vehicle, there is no special fee or discount for us. If we park at the RTA’s paid parking areas, we need to pay and we usually do it through smart parking services,” said Mercado.

“When we deliver food, some buildings have designated areas to park for free. But sometimes, RTA inspectors let us park for a couple minutes to deliver the food,” he added.
