VAT won’t deter UAE fashionistas
dubai — VAT? What VAT? Nothing deters Dubai when it comes to shopping even if that means the implementation of value-added tax (VAT) at the rate of five per cent on most goods and services.
Prominent fashionistas are shrugging off the impact of VAT and heading to malls to check out the latest offers during the Dubai Shopping Festival 2017-2018.
There is a consensus within the fashion industry that despite VAT being introduced in the UAE, the consumer will ultimately buy what they want. Passionate fashion lovers have set their minds on the latest release of makeup, clothing and accessories so much so that the introduction of VAT will not influence their purchase decisions, says Dubai-based Modupe Omonze, founder of Runway Dubai, a popular fashion platform for UAE-based designers.
“The DSF represents one of the largest retail shopping events in the world, attracting more than three million visitors globally with fashion and design being the leading theme for the season; I expect this trend to continue in 2018 and well beyond,” added Modupe.
Fashion lovers use the DSF to buy desired goods in advance to organise their looks for the entire year.
“Dubai has made a mark as one of fashion’s focal points and a certified go-to place for the latest treasure troves from the Indian sari to a modern abaya. The fashion industry is booming here as we are spoilt for choice — from the numerous department stores and fashion designers to independent tailors — every taste is catered for.”
Another Dubai-based designer Sneha Arvind said: “I believe that fashion enthusiasts will not be deterred by VAT because fashion is their passion and they will account for it in their sale prices. However, the general public who will be window shopping for potential niche designs may have second thoughts before purchasing certain apparel because the VAT on high-end apparel may be a bit too much.”
This time around, the DSF has created more opportunities for budding designers to showcase their work in many locations for the public to enjoy. They have also collaborated with existing events.

The diverse nationalities in Dubai are what makes the city a creative melting pot for innovative designs and cultural integration. Allowing designers to get in touch with their heritage and incorporating them into the design opens avenues for new ideas that can attract well-known international events to be held in Dubai. The city can accommodate these events and push the envelope in fashion design, informs Arvind.
Fashion designer Sheerin Mansoor said: “I used to reside in Oman and remember driving to Dubai just for the DSF. I don’t think anything has changed since. In fact, it has become much more easier for consumers with smart buying as well as for companies. Dubai is the most multicultural and modern city, you can meet people from all walks of life and cultures, who also bring in their individual style and fashion.”
