dubai — With an aim to leave a lasting renewable energy legacy, Expo 2020 Dubai, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), have launched the ‘Sustainability Champions’ programme for all schools in the UAE.

Public and private schools will have the opportunity to showcase how they are playing their part in ensuring a sustainable future in the UAE. Initially, two selected schools will be support for the sustainability programmes and will benefit from the installation of photovoltaic panels by the Expo 2020.

The initiative was announced by Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Jameela Al Muhairi, Minister of State for Public Education, and Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, executive director of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, at the Expo 2020 stand at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) in Adnec.

Schools can participate by submitting applications through an online portal by April 1 and submit enquiries via email: sustainability. champions@expo2020.ae.

Following a preliminary review of eligibility and compliance, two schools will be selected by a panel based on criteria such as the school’s commitment and vision for sustainability. The panel will comprise experts from the Expo 2020 Dubai and the two participating ministries.

The chosen schools will be announced on Earth Day (April 22) and the planning for photovoltaic panel installations will kick off immediately afterwards.

“Through the Sustainability Champions, we aim to educate the youth on the vital significance of sustainable habits and environmental conservation for the future of our country. The programme offers students an opportunity to become real partners and actively participate in developing sustainable solutions,” said Dr Al Zeyoudi.
