ras al khaimah — Can a traffic signal be cursed? This seems to be the case in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), with the Al Rams-Shamal traffic lights which is down yet again.

Residents complain that it has happened “countless” times. Despite being reinstalled each time and having had the cables and lights replaced, the signal goes out of order for no clear reason.

In the past, Al Rams-Shamal traffic light has been out-of-service for weather-related reasons as well. The most malfunctioning traffic signal has also been blamed for some terrible accidents, including one last year in which a woman and her child were killed. The husband, who was blamed for jumping the red light, claimed there was a glitch in the signal.

Al Rams residents have cried foul over the repetitive break down, urging the authorities to solve this perennial problem affecting road users.

The RAK Police’s Traffic and Patrols department — in response to drivers’ complaints at being caught by the Al Rams traffic radars — have decided to cancel all the violations recorded on the arterial intersection.

Colonel Ahmed Saeed Al Sam Al Naqbi, deputy director of the Traffic and Patrols department, said the decision follows the directives of Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police. “We have been alerted that some drivers were caught by the cameras on the Al Rams-Shamal traffic signal while it was out of order; these fines were revoked.”
