dubai — From Dubai Police officers to officials at Dubai Customs and Dubai Municipality, several hundred government employees walked three kilometres to kickstart celebrations of the annual UAE Customs Week 2018.

Coinciding with ongoing celebrations of the Year of Zayed, the three-km Zayed Centennial Walkathon took place at the Al Khawaneej Walking Track on Sunday. “The Centennial Walkathon, in collaboration with Dubai Municipality, encouraged everyone to make walking a daily practice. It also imparts the teaching and support that the late leader gave to sport,” said Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, director of Dubai Customs.

Musabih kick-started the walk, accompanied by the band members of the Dubai Police musical band and young students of the Dubai Scouts Mission. Braving the cold wind, participants and their families cheerfully walked three kilometres, sporting special Year of Zayed T-shirts.

Khalil Sager, director of communications department at the Dubai Custom, said: “This is the first activity in the series of events for the ongoing Dubai Customs Week. A historical document and picture exhibition was also launched, in collaboration with the National Department of Archives earlier today.”

Sagher also confirmed that all activities will focus on teachings and principles of the late Sheikh Zayed. There was also a display of classic cars and a moving library featuring books penned by the late leader. Young school children of the Dubai Scouts Mission also actively walked three kilometres.

Fuaad Al Shehi, manager of Dubai Customs volunteer team, said: “We are very excited to be here today. The idea to host this event was first idea raised by one of our staff who worked in the Customs Department at Dubai Airport, Terminal 2. We floated the idea to our communication team, and its a first time for us as well.”

Fatima Salem, member of volunteer team at Dubai Customs revealed that almost 60 per cent of the participants were with Dubai Customs.
