Bahrain strike gold in pistol shooting

- KT Report

sharjah — Bahrain’s pistol shooting experts claimed gold in the 10m competition of the Arab Women’s Sports Tournament (AWST 2018), after Mouza Ali Abdul Rahim produced an awe-inspiring score of 233 points in the individual event, followed by compatriot Ayesha Hilal Al Buraiki who came second with 230 points, just edging out the UAE into bronze.

The team event was fiercely contested between eventual Bahraini winners Ayesha Hila, Al Buraiki, Mouza Ali Abdul Rahim and Lubna Abdul Aziz Al Issa. The UAE team finished with a highly creditable silver medal through Wafa Khamis Al Ali, Salwa Saeed Al Dhaheri and Salma Al Hassouni. Omani shooters, namely Suhair Salem Al Jahmania, Doha Naseer Al Beloushi and Omaima Ibrahim Al Waheebi completed the podium with bronze.

Five Arab countries took part in the 10m air pistol individual and team games that involved eight participants from the UAE, four from Bahrain and four from Oman, while Iraq and Algeria entered three players each.

Sharjah Sports Club for Women celebrated a convincing win on the first day of the volleyball competition defeating Oman’s Sahar Club by three sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-12) to nil.

It was a similar story for Al Wasl Club who showed a clean pair of heels to Al Muharraq from Bahrain after a temporary glitch as they emerged victorious with a win of three sets to one.

Despite such renowned names as Hajar Al Ansari and Brazil’s Lanka, the Bahraini players were no match for Al Wasl, who breezed through the first set 25-12, thanks in no small part to the dominance of their American player Amber, who scored 19 of those points.

The second set, however, showed there was no room for complacency in the Al Wasl camp as the game balanced on a knifeedge up to the final minutes, which saw Al Muharraq level the set scores with a 25-22 victory.

Sets three and four reverted back to type though and while it was no easy win, Al Wasl proved to be the stronger of the two teams, finishing the round with 24-17 and 25-18 triumphs in the third and fourth sets respectively.

In a fascinating game for neutrals but an excruciating one for Sharjah Sports Club for Women, the Al Fuhays team from Jordan scraped the narrowest of victories in the final minutes of their second round match, beating the hosts 70-66 and putting them top of the table in the process.

The Al Fatat team from Kuwait has had its first taste of victory in the AWST basketball event, with a comprehensive 82-55 win over Jeddah United. The match saw Kuwait compensate for their loss in the first round having been beaten by Sporting Team from Egypt, while Jeddah United maintain their losing streak following defeat on the opening day against the Sharjah Sports ladies 30-90.
