-

sharjah — The fencing team from Sharjah Sports Club for Women won the gold medal in the foil finals of the Arab Women Sports Tournament 2018 (AWST).

The team dedicated their victory to Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of Sharjah Women’s Sports Foundation (SWSF), saying their achievement would not have been possible without her constant support.

Taking silver in the event, Bahrain’s Al Hala Club beat the Emirati Bani Yas Club and the KSA team, who shared bronze. The fencing competition was a close run affair with the Arab women showing outstanding skill and their ability to compete on a world stage.

Emphasising the point, the Egyptian Sporting Club displayed superb confidence and competence which earned them the gold in the team epee competition, with Sharjah Sports Club for Women securing silver in another classic team effort.

In the volleyball event, the hardhitting team from Sharjah Sports Club for Women came up against equally ruthless opponents in the form Al Muharraq Club from Bahrain, as the match swayed from one side to the other, eventually peaking in a final set decider where Sharjah just scraped home with a three-point win.

From the start, it was clear to the crowds it was going to be a noholds-barred contest, although despite Al Muharraq’s early steadfast defence Sharjah won the first set with a score of 25-19.

The second match featured Morocco’s El Difaa and Al Fatat from Kuwait and despite the possibility of an upset, the Moroccans never looked in danger of giving anything away, comfortably winning the match 25-15, 25-18, 25-16.

In the shooting event, Bahrain dominated by winning gold in the team final of the 10m Rifle and taking a silver in the individual event, just behind Kuwaiti Mariam Al Razouqi but ahead of third place Omani Siham Al Hasaniya.
