Respect UAE ideals, Modi tells Indian expatriates
Indian Prime Minister addresses 1800-strong crowd at the Dubai Opera, unveils model of the first Hindu temple to be constructed in Abu Dhabi
The 3.5 million plus Indian community in the UAE has the collective responsibility to uphold the values of their host country, and reciprocate the leadership’s respect and generosity, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday. “The rulers here have respected India. It is our responsibility to take care of the ideals here,” Modi told the 1800-strong crowd that had gathered at the Dubai Opera to listen to him.
“The UAE is the second home for thousands of Indians who have woven their dreams here. A mini India resides in the UAE. You must be responsible and uphold the principles of tolerance and peace.”
Chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ filled the Opera House as Modi, dressed in a traditional Indian cream kurta and a grey waistcoat, entered the stage minutes after 10am and greeted the crowd.
The second state visit of the Indian PM also marked a ‘Millennial Moment’ as he unveiled the model of the first Hindu temple to be constructed in Abu Dhabi for the benefit of the thousands of devotees who otherwise have to travel all the way to Dubai to offer prayers in the temple.
“I want to thank His Highness the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on behalf of the 125 crore Indians for the grand temple, which will be constructed,” said Modi who was on a two-day state visit to the UAE that started on Sunday.
“The temple is a holy place that can be a catalyst to bring harmony and humanity. I believe this temple will not be only unique in terms of architecture and splendor, but will also give a message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) to people all over the world.”
The mini replica of the BAPS temple was covered by palm leaves representing the UAE that has long offered shelter and sustenance in the desert.
A giant screen on the stage live-streamed visuals straight from the temple site in Abu Dhabi where the sanctification ceremony (Shila Pujan) of the temple foundation stone, was held in the presence of senior BAPS priests. The temple is expected to be completed by 2020.
Hailing the growing India-UAE ties, Modi said after many decades, India has established a wider, deeper and stronger bond with the Gulf countries.
“It is no more a buyer and seller relationship. It is a meaningful partnership.”
Modi said he had a meaningful meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and that the two countries have signed agreements that will take the partnership beyond bilateral ties.
