Visitor defrauds trader in bogus car sale deal

dubai — A 40-year-old man allegedly defrauded a trader of Dh2.1 million in a bogus car sale deal, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard on Monday. The Pakistani man, who was in the country on a visit visa, pretended he had the possession documents of 43 cars. But it turned out later that those documents were fake and were not issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

He has been charged with forgery, use of forged documents, forgery of government seal and fraud. The case unfolded between December 11, 2016, and January 26, 2017.

The visitor had an accomplice and they both used the forged documents when presenting them to the trader after learning he needed to buy 43 second hand cars.

The 45-year-old complainant from Jordan said he purchased many cars from the defendant who worked at auto showrooms. “On December 11, 2016, I bought three cars worth Dh300,000 from his boss and gave him three cheques. He issued a handwritten contract, but kept giving excuses for not handing over the title deeds.

“On January 19, 2017, I had an agreement with the defendant’s boss to purchase 36 used cars worth Dh1.63 million. They gave me a handwritten contract. I paid them Dh60,000 in cash and gave them a Dh80,000 cheque,” the trader said. About four days later, he bought four cars worth Dh565,000 from them.

On January 26, 2017, he met them and paid Dh1.61 million in cash and was given the possession documents for 43 cars. He paid them another installment worth Dh135,000 later.

When he went to the RTA on the same day to register the cars in his name, he was told the documents he had were forged.

An Egyptian sales manager, 42, said the complainant was a business partner in an auto showroom. He told the prosecutor he was present when the complainant paid the accused.
