Film director of teaser song that went viral booked

HYDERABAD — Police in Hyderabad on Wednesday registered a case for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Muslims against the director of a Malayalam movie, whose song featuring actress Priya Prakash Varrier has gone viral.

On a complaint by some youths in the old city of Hyderabad, the police registered a case against Omar Lulu, director of Oru Adhaar Love and some others.

The case under Indian Penal Code’s Section 295 (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) was registered at Falaknuma Police Station, said Deputy Commission­er of Police V. Satyanaray­ana.

According to the police official, the case was registered on a complaint by Abdul Muqeet and others sought immediate ban on the song as it hurt their religious sentiments.

The DCP said the police were investigat­ing the case and appropriat­e action would be taken after taking legal opinion and ascertaini­ng the facts.

The Malayalam film is scheduled to be released on March 1.

Abdul Muqeet, an engineerin­g student, told reporters that he noticed the objectiona­ble part of the song while listening to it on the Internet. He informed his other friends and they decided to lodge a complaint with the police. He said if necessary they would take legal action against the filmmaker.

Meanwhile, Omar Lulu on Wednesday claimed the song had no objectiona­ble reference and said Muslims in a part of Kerala had been singing it for over four decades.

The 18-year-old actor Priya, whose wink and smile in the teaser song, catapulted her to national fame, said she wants to be known as a good actor, rather than as a ‘wink queen’.

Priya Varrier become an overnight sensation and has got 3 million followers on Instagram and You Tube after the teaser song from her first film, Oru Adaar Love went viral.

With her expression­s, Priya Varrier stole the hearts of her social media followers as the song went viral.

However, she said: “I would like to be known as good actor rather being known as wink queen.” A B.Com student and a classical dancer from Thrissur, the actor said she would like to continue acting along with her studies and singing.

Being a dancer had helped her in giving the expression­s in the teaser, now being admired, she said.

Oru Adaar Love is a romantic comedy and has Siyadh Shahjahan and Noorin Shereef sharing space with Priya. — IANS, PTI
