Accidents claim two lives in Sharjah

sharjah — An Indian pedestrian and an Emirati motorist were killed in two separate road accidents in Sharjah on Saturday.

In the first accident, the 26-yearold Indian died on the spot on Saturday evening after he was run over by a speeding car on Mleiha-AlDhaid Road.

The police said the deceased who worked in a petrol station had told his co-worker that he was going for prayer. He was hit by a speeding car while trying to cross the road.

The deceased was shifted to Al Dhaid Hospital morgue and the case was referred to Central Area police station for investigat­ion.

In another accident, a 35-yearold Emirati man died and three others received serious injuries in a horrific accident on Saturday evening in Al Hamriya area.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the wheel, causing the car to overturn several times and killing him on the spot. The Sharjah Police urged motorists to abide by traffic laws at all times, in order to avoid fatal accidents.

The force’s statistics show a decrease in the accident mortality rate by 20 per cent during the past year, with 105 deaths, compared to 132 in 2016.

Accidents also reduced by 15 per cent in 2017 (517 accidents), compared to 2016, (608 accidents) including collisions and turnover accidents. Runover accidents also decreased by 14 per cent in 2017, with 156 incidents compared to 182 in 2016.
