9 workers injured in Ajman gas cylinder blast
ajman — Nine workers were moderately injured in a gas cylinder explosion at their living premises in Ajman on Monday.
Lt-Col Faisal Mohammed Al Shaiba, deputy director of civil protection and safety department at the Ajman Civil Defence, said there was no fire in the incident. “A number of gas cylinders exploded at a workers’ accommodation, causing injuries to nine workers. There was no fire; it was just an explosion. The Ajman Police and ambulances arrived at the scene and dealt with the accident.”
Following the incident, the civil defence has intensified inspections at workers’ accommodations and warehouses. “Many warehouses stored over 100 gas cylinders, without adhering to the safety regulations, which is a punishable offence. The cylinders must be stored with proper ventilation and away from accommodations.”
Lt-Col Al Shaiba added that the owners were given a grace period to rectify and implement proper procedures for fire safety. “The inspectors will visit the warehouse again to ensure they have followed the instructions, failure of which will attract legal actions.”
He urged the owners of labour accommodations and warehouses to implement the safety and protection procedures and refrain from using it as a storage area, especially for dangerous materials.
