Guard accused of stealing money from shoppers’ bags

- Marie Nammour

dubai — A security guard, who allegedly stole money from two visitors of a shopping centre, stood trial in the Court of First Instance.

Public prosecution records show that the 25-year-old Pakistani man stole $4,100 and €400 from a woman’s bag and $500 from another woman, after they deposited their stuff at the baggage deposit hall of the mall.

The accused denied a theft charge in the court.

A complaint about the theft was registered in January and the accused was arrested on January 7. He was interrogated at Bur Dubai police station.

A policeman, who questioned the defendant after the theft incident had been reported, said the accused willingly admitted to the theft charge. “He said he worked as a guard at the concierge hall of a shopping centre where visitors’ bags are usually kept. On the incident day, three African women came and handed an employee two bags to keep. The guard later stole money from the bags after finding that no one was around,” the officer told the prosecutor.

During questioning, the defendant admitted he searched the complainants’ bags and stole their money. He also confessed he had been stealing from the bags of visitors at the shopping centre since he began work one-and-ahalf year back, and sending the money to his home country.

The police searched the defendant’s place and found $4,600, €1,970, Dh310 and money in another currency.
