dubai — The UAE is a small country and therefore we need to stay united and come together when it comes to supporting a noble cause. This was a message that about 350 UAE residents gave out on Friday morning as they joined a Superhero Fun Run to promote the determined ones at Al Noor Training Centre in Al Barsha.

About 10 people of determination supported by over 200 people from of all ages, background and professions ran for almost 4km to exercise, stay fit and support a great cause.

Friends and colleagues Khalid Al Zaabi, 29, and Khaled Al Khalfan, 31, came all the way from Kuwait to take part in the superhero fun run. The Kuwaiti nationals were dressed in the attire of their favourite superheroes, Batman and Superman. And the duo took the first and second position in the race.

“As much as we love superhero races, we love running for causes. Today was a very special event as we are thrilled that we managed to run side by side with the determined ones and proved to be true superheroes by winning the race. A lot of the kids came up to us and asked us to get pictures clicked with them — truly a superhero moment for us,” said Al Zaabi. Present at the event to inspire and be inspired by the determined ones was the UAE’s youngest rhythmic gymnast Lamia Tariq, who said: “I just want to tell everyone that we should eat healthy, stay happy and take up more sports.”

Sri Lankan couple Sean and Wendy came with their five kids — all dressed as super heroes to support the cause. Sean said: “We are blessed to have a big happy family and we feel it is our duty to give back to the society by at least supporting them in such an event. It is a blessing if we are able to come here all together to support the determined ones.”

Emirati national Mayassa Al Tajir in her 20s, who was dressed as a wonder woman, won in the best costume category. Al Tajir, who loves Greek mythology, said she designed her costume specially for the Superhero fun run. “I like dressing up and for today’s event, I wanted to dress up to inspire these lovely determined ones.”

All participants of the fun run were given certificates and free entry to the Al Noor Fun Fair 2018 that started at 9am (immediately after the run). They also were given discounted breakfast coupons at the fun fair food court.

The school has been organising the carnival for the last 19 years, but this is the debut Superhero Fun Race. Talking about the idea behind the race, Isphana Al Khatib, director of Al Noor Training Centre, said: “This was the first time we added a superhero fun run to our carnival just to add a fun and fitness element to it. And this was something that would not only attract families but would appeal to people from all walks of life. We believe that everyone has some or the other quality of a superhero and if all of them can unite for the right cause then we can do wonders for the world. The carnival was planned and designed in a way that there is something for everyone,” concluded Al Khatib.
