Jurists seek action over Qatar terror funding
geneva — Leading jurists have called on the international community to stop Qatar from supporting terrorist organisations. They also urged human rights organisations to change their policy of ignoring Qatar’s human rights record.
During a seminar organised by the Arab Federation for Human Rights, on the sidelines of the 37th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the jurists expressed their dissatisfaction at Qatar’s continued support to terrorists and extremist organisations.
The participants of the seminar were unanimous that justice could not be ensured and terrorism could not be eradicated unless those responsible were held accountable.
The speakers warned that silence on Qatar’s activities sent a wrong message to those aggrieved by terrorism and threatens the right to life, which is a key human right, as well as the right to liberty and personal security.
They said that Qatar’s role in terror attacks in Bahrain and Yemen, as well as in Egypt and Libya, was no longer a secret, and there were no doubts about the links between the Qatari authorities and terrorism.
The speakers also pointed out that necessary evidence was available which confirmed Doha’s financial, media and operational support to terrorist organisations in these countries. — Wam
