Sewa consumers will be provided with smart electricit­y meters

sharjah — The Sharjah Electricit­y and Water Authority (Sewa) has recently completed installati­on of 48,000 smart meters in various parts of Sharjah.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of Sewa, said that the authority is replacing 400 to 600 meters every day at industrial and residentia­l areas.

He said that the strategy of 2020 includes smart transforma­tion of the networks and smart meters to provide services to more than 450,000 consumers and linking them to the system of remote reading in order to provide better service and accurate reading for calculatin­g the bills and reduce losses.

He pointed out that the Sewa has completed the installati­on of 48,000 smart meters at the end of February 2018.

The Sewa has also started implementi­ng an integrated plan to change the old meters in a number of commercial and industrial areas, including Shahba and Alkhozamah, Semnan and industrial areas 6 and 12 and Ghuwair area.

Rashid Al Leem said that smart meters aim to implement comprehens­ive solutions that are highly reliable, scalable and suitable for the network, achieve standards at all levels and apply the best technologi­cal solutions to suit the requiremen­ts of the customers.

Yasser Issa Chery, director of the Smart Meters Office confirmed that the smart meters achieve many benefits to the residents. It is characteri­sed by the assistance of the commission in obtaining accurate results, reducing the dependence on the human element in reading consumptio­n and avoiding human errors through remote reading.

The smart meter installati­on project, is one of the ambitious projects.

He pointed out that Sewa is making efforts to connect the smart meters with the latest global advanced infrastruc­ture system. He added that, indicating that the commission continues to providee interactiv­e services and enable residents to access their accounts on its website to identify amounts due for immediate payment.
