dubai — A 29-year-old Indian worker, who tried to kill his compatriot while drunk, has been sentenced to three months in jail.

He pleaded not guilty to an attempted murder charge when he appeared at the Court of First Instance earlier. He claimed they both assaulted each other.

The accused also faced a charge of consuming alcohol without a licence for which he received an additional one month in jail.

The court ordered his deportation after he completed his jail term.

The case dates back to October 19, 2017, in Al Qusais.

A 36-year-old Nigerian man (assistant), who lived in the same labour accommodation as the two men and who witnessed the incident, told the investigating prosecutor: “Around 10:40pm, when I was having dinner in my room, I suddenly heard screams coming from outside. There were three men who were talking about a man who had got stabbed. I went to check what was going on.

“I saw the victim lying down in a pool of blood. He looked badly injured. I called the police and he was rushed to hospital.”

A 38-year-old Indian labourer said: “I was with them while they looked both drunk as they had consumed alcohol outside and I was listening to songs.

“Suddenly, they started fighting and the defendant took a vegetable knife that was in the room and stabbed the victim.”

According to the witness, the defendant stabbed the victim twice in his abdomen and fled the scene.

“The victim then fell, seriously bleeding,” the Indian witness said.

According to the specialised criminal evidence department report, the injuries the victim received were deep and could have ended his life had he not undergone urgent surgeries.
