Life at American University of Sharjah (AUS) offers a truly multicultural environment. In fact, the university has over 90 nationalities on campus and last year Times Higher Education (THE) named it as the number one university in the world with the highest percentage of international students.

A major attraction for students opting to study at AUS is that the university is accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Affairs Division in the UAE. It is also accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Dr. Björn Kjerfve, Chancellor, AUS shares: “We are proud that the bachelor of science degree programmes in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering offered by our College of Engineering (CEN) are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET in the US, while our bachelor of science degree programme in computer science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. We were the first university in the Gulf region and the second outside the US to receive this accreditation.”

The university’s Bachelor of Architecture programme is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board of the US. This is the first programme outside of North America to receive this accreditation. While the School of Business Administration is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

As AUS moves into the next phase of its development, Kjerfve highlights that the university is steadfast in achieving its goal of becoming the region’s premier research institution, as envisaged by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of AUS.

Promising careers

As major development projects are on the rise in the UAE, an increased number of individuals skilled in the field of engineering systems management are being required. Therefore, the university’s recently launched PhD programme in engineering will help fill the demand for highly qualified systems management professionals in the Middle East.

Kjerfve remarks: “AUS decided to launch the programme following a clear need for trained engineers that are also well-versed in management. As the UAE and its neighbours undertake a number of nation-building projects, those responsible for leading such projects will be required to not only have technological and scientific qualifications, but also be administerial and managerial savvy.”

Furthermore, AUS provides a number of grants and scholarships to help students with their education costs. The university has designated funds available for highly-qualified undergraduate students with limited financial resources. Plus, AUS is renowned for its stunning campus and the facilities it provides to its campus community.

Our university is committed to encouraging and supporting the research, creative and scholarly activities of its faculty and students. These activities are integral to the holistic learning process, intellectual growth and innovation, and contribute to the progress of Sharjah and the UAE toward a knowledge-based economy and global prominence.” – Dr. Björn Kjerfve, Chancellor
