Medical education and healthcare have been undergoing rapid transformations in recent times, with innovation being the driving factor of pathbreaking advancements and transformations.

As the leading private medical University in the Middle East region drawing students from more than 80 countries and employing faculty and staff from over 25 countries, the Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, has always been at the forefront of innovation in medical education and healthcare. Not only does the University spend considerable efforts and resources in innovation, but it has also imbibed innovation in its culture, encouraging its students, faculties and researchers to develop innovative solutions to modern healthcare challenges.

Under the academic leadership of the Chancellor Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the internationally renowned medical educator and pediatric surgeon, GMU has been undergoing significant transformations in teaching and learning methodologies. GMU is playing a key role in producing innovative technology for training of students and is at the forefront of introducing new technology. With this training, which benefits close to 20 per cent of the doctors and 60 per cent of the healthcare professionals in the country, the impact of GMU’s emphasis on innovation has been significant. Considering that GMU alumni are spread throughout the world, pursuing healthcare careers in different countries with varied development statuses, this impact is much more, and growing globally.

Innovation in medical education and healthcare has long been at the heart of Gulf Medical University’s vision. The University fosters a high level of learner engagement conducive to addressing the challenges of the rapidly changing healthcare world.

GMU has advanced teaching, training and research technologies. The Virtual Patient Learning (VPL) of GMU was developed by the University in partnership with a Swiss company, and it is an artificial intelligence based, problem-based learning innovation in medical education.

GMU’s world-class research facilities include the Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine, Thumbay Institute of Population Health and the Thumbay Institute of Health Workforce Development & Leadership. These institutes facilitate the development of health professionals of the future: the professional, the scholar and the educator.

Gulf Medical University has grown into a fullfledged Academic Health System (AHS), together with the Thumbay network of academic hospitals under Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division. GMU-AHS is the first and only private academic health system in the region.

The GMU-AHS links the healthcare, education and research functions, to achieve wider community engagement by developing a deeper social conscience and delivering significant economic and health benefits to the community.
