Politicians deserve same respect as judges, generals, says Abbasi
pasrur — Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that politicians deserve to get same respect as judges, generals, and other government officials.
Addressing a ceremony in Pasrur on Saturday, the PM said a country needs to respect its politicians to ensure its progress.
“Politicians are in the front when it comes to running the country and solving its problems,” Abbasi was quoted as saying by Geo News.
The PM said the general election in the country would be held before July 30.
“If the elections are delayed then we will approach the courts and the people,” he was quoted as saying in an event by Geo News. He said that politicians were mandated by masses to serve the country and thus they deserved due respect. The prime minister said, “Politicians should have the same respect as enjoyed by the others. The running of the country’s affairs was vested only with the politicians who were chosen by the electorate through their ballots.”
Abbasi further said the politicians worked for the country and always presented themselves before the public for accountability after every five years.
The prime minister called for giving respect to public mandate. The people’s verdict on polling booths should be respected, he added. The prime minister said, “We always respected judicial verdicts and implemented them but decisions against politicians were neither accepted by the people nor the history would endorse them.”
He referred to the presence of former foreign minister Khawaja Asif on the stage and said the people of the area knew his political background as he has always served them.
On possessing a visa, he stood disqualified, Abbasi said, questioning whether such decisions would serve the country.
The prime minister observed that the constitution was very clear about the role of politicians and the masses in running the government’s affairs, the latter would have to take decision during elections and their verdict should be respected for five years. —
