DUBAI — Two Bangladeshi men have been charged with kidnapping a compatriot after posing as officers from the criminal investigation department (CID) and robbing him of Dh15,000.

The Court of First Instance heard the victim was a rival to the illegal massage business of one of the defendants. The duo wanted to get back at him together with runaway accomplices.

The pair beat up the victim and tied him up in their car. After that, they stole Dh15,000 and a ring from him.

The two men, aged 35 and 32, denied charges of impersonation as police officers, kidnap and forcible street theft.

The complaint was received by Al Qusais police station on February 24, this year.

A police lieutenant said they received a kidnap and assault incident report outside a labour accommodation in Al Muhaisna. “At the crime scene, the victim told us he was walking at 1.30pm towards a labour accommodation when a car stopped. There were four men inside and one of them shouted they were from the CID,” the officer said.

The victim told the police three men stepped off and forced him inside their car while assaulting him. They drove to Jebel Ali. “During the trip, they kept beating me after tying me up. They took my wallet in which I had Dh15,000 and snatched my ring and mobile phone. They asked me whether I was into bootlegging and prostitution,” the victim told the investigators, adding the kidnappers untied him and dropped him back in Al Qusais shortly later and then drove off.

When caught, one of the accused told the police the victim, who is a cleaner, worked in illegal massage service and he was a rival to him so he decided to get him off his way. He sought the help of his friends in kidnapping and assaulting the victim. He claimed their motive was to scare the victim off that business.

The two men admitted to the charges during investigation. The second accused claimed he got paid Dh200 for his role.

The trial has been adjourned to May 15.
